Puddle Under Your Car? How to Identify a Coolant Leak

You back out of the driveway and there's a puddle where the car was sitting. Before you panic — or ignore it — figure out what it is.

Identify the fluid first

Green, orange, pink, or blue, slightly slimy, sweet smell — coolant. Keep reading.

Clear and odorless, usually under the passenger side on a hot day — A/C condensation. Completely normal.

Brown or black, slick, oily — engine oil.

Reddish and thin — transmission fluid or power steering fluid.

Clear to light brown, oily, near a wheel — brake fluid. Treat that one as urgent.

Where coolant leaks come from

Locate the puddle relative to the car and you narrow it down fast.

Front and center, under the radiator — the radiator itself. Plastic end tanks crack with age and heat cycling, and the seam where the tank crimps to the core is a very common failure point.

Front, and it appears mostly after driving — a hose. Upper and lower radiator hoses go soft, swell, or split at the clamps.

Center of the engine, behind the belt area, often with a crusty residue trail — the water pump. Water pumps have a weep hole designed to drip when the internal seal fails, which is your early warning.

Near the thermostat housing — a failed gasket, or a housing that's warped or cracked. Often paired with erratic temperature gauge behavior. See thermostat replacement.

Inside the car, wet passenger floorboard, sweet smell, foggy windshield — heater core. That one's a bigger job.

How long can you drive on it?

That depends entirely on the rate.

A few drops overnight and a coolant level that barely moves? You have some time, but check the reservoir every single time you drive, and top it off.

A visible stream, a puddle the size of a dinner plate, or a temperature gauge climbing above normal? Don't drive it. Overheating is the fastest way to destroy an engine — a warped head or a blown head gasket costs many times what the original leak repair would have.

If the gauge is in the red, pull over and shut it off. Turning the heater on full blast pulls some heat out of the engine and can buy you a few minutes to reach a safe stopping point, but that's a rescue measure, not a fix.

Never open a hot radiator cap. Pressurized coolant above boiling point will come out at you.
